SELECTOR’S BULLETIN #155 – Teltscher Trophy

Bob Pitts & Barry Jones have had to withdraw from the Wales Team that was chosen to play in the Teltscher Trophy scheduled to be held in Northern Ireland over the weekend of 20th – 22nd May. They will be replaced by Gilly Clench and Dave Birt, who were initially chosen as the reserve pair.

The Teltscher Trophy team is now:

SELECTOR’S BULLETIN #154 – 11th European Women’s National Pairs Championship and 9th European Seniors’ National Pairs Championship Funchal – Madeira

11th European Women’s National Pairs Championship and 9th European Seniors’ National Pairs Championship will be held in Funchal – Madeira on 12th – 15th June 2022

The Events are organised by the European Bridge League in cooperation with the Portuguese Bridge Federation at the Savoy Palace Hotel from 12th to 15th June 2022

It is anticipated that each Championship will consist of two stages: a Qualifying Stage, and a Final Stage (Final A and Final B). However, should the number of participants permit, there will be a one stage all-play all (Endless Howell) competition. Details of the competitions may be changed according to the final registration of participants. Further information is available in the Supplemental Conditions of Contest on the EBL Website. All pairs must comprise two players from the same NBO.

To participate in the Seniors Series a player must have been born in 1959 or earlier.

SELECTOR’S BULLETIN #153 – European National Teams Championships

55th EUROPEAN BRIDGE TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS

Funchal – Madeira/Portugal

Organised by the European Bridge League – In cooperation with the Portuguese Bridge Federation

The 55th European Bridge Team Championships will be held at Casino Da Madeira & Savoy Palace Hotel on 12th to 22nd June 2022

The Championships consist of four Series: Open, Women, Seniors and Mixed.

All four Championships will be played as a single complete round robin. The number of boards played in each match will be determined and published when the number of participants is known.

The Open Championship will be played over 11 days, and the Women’s, Seniors’ and Mixed Championships will be played over 7 days.

• Open & Mixed Teams will be played at the Casino Da Madeira

• Womens/Seniors Pairs & Teams will be played at the Savoy Palace Hotel

Each member NBO is authorised to enter one team each in the Open, Women, Seniors and Mixed Series.

NBOs must have paid the entry fee and be in good standing with the EBL, including payment of 2022 annual dues to the EBL.

SELECTOR’S BULLETIN #152 – European National Teams Championships

The 55th European National Teams Championships will be held in Funchal in Madeira, with play starting on the 12th June and ending on the 22nd of June 2022.

The Event in Funchal will also comprise Women’s, Senior’s and Mixed Teams events, to be held 16th-22nd June, and Women’s and Senior’s Pairs to be held on 12th-15th June.

Players interested in playing in any of these events should inform the Selectors with an expression of interest. Some limited funding may be available to cover the Entry Fee for the Teams events.

SELECTOR’S BULLETIN #151 – Lady Milne Selection 2022

A Cross-IMP Trial was held over the weekend 22 – 23 January 2022 on RealBridge. The trial utilised hands from a past European Teams event of a suitable standing and the event was scored both against the datum scores derived from that event, and the Cross IMP scores from the trial.

As the Welsh Bridge Union are hosting this event in 2022, the Welsh Bridge Union are able to field two teams of six players (with the teams designated as Wales and WBU).

If the Teltscher Trophy is moved to an online format, then the selectors will reserve the right to re-evaluate the team and consider other interested pairs.

Entries are being sought (through the portal on the WBU website) from players interested in playing in the Teltscher Trophy next year. Currently BGB are planing that the Teltscher Trophy event will be run as a Face-to-Face event although this may change depending on any current Government guidance. It is planned that the Teltscher Trophy will be held in Northern Ireland on 20th – 22nd May 2022.

The European Bridge League website states that age requirements for Senior events are in accordance with the following schedule:

From 1st January 2018, a Senior player must be aged 61 in the year of the Championship in which they are going to play
On 1st January 2020 this will be raised to 62 years of age
On 1st January 2022 it will be raised to 63 years of age
On 1st January 2024 it will be raised to 64 years of age
On 1st January 2026 it will be raised to 65 years of age

So if you have a 63rd. birthday sometime in 2022 you qualify. The BGB Home International Regulations explain it as:

“Players in the Teltscher Trophy must be born in or before 1959.”

It is planned that a Teltscher trial will held online on 29th and 30th January 2022 , using the RealBridge platform, to assist the Selectors with the selection of the three pairs that will make up the team. The trial will be run as a Cross-IMP pairs trial, with the winners of the Trial being guaranteed a place in the team.

Entries are requested through the online portal by 20th January 2022, although late entries may be considered at the discretion of the Selectors.The number of boards to be played each day, the boards per round and round start times will be finalised once entries are known. It is planned that a Lady Milne Trail will held online on 22nd and 23rd January 2022 , using the RealBridge platform, to assist the Selectors with the selection of the six pairs that will make up the two teams. The Lady Milne trial will be run as a Cross-IMP pairs trial, with the winners of the Trial being guaranteed a place in one of the teams.
